Told in flashback by a man claiming to be the killer&#8217;s brother, it&#8217;s the story of a kind, hard-working widower raising two sons, who believes he has been visited by an angel of God and given the task of destroying demons in preparation for the coming Apocalypse. The younger son believes in Dad&#8217;s story, but the older of the two boys thinks, quite understandably, that Dad&#8217;s gone nuts, especially when he starts kidnapping folks and taking an axe to them out in the shed.<\/p>\n<p>Creepy and unsettling, with its hypnotically ticking soundtrack and shadowy visuals, the movie doesn&#8217;t shriek or spatter you with gore; it just sneaks up on you quietly until it has you by the throat and won&#8217;t let go. Bill is wonderful as Dad, an earnest man who truly believes he&#8217;s doing God&#8217;s work. Well, we were told at the beginning that Dad was dead. It was just a matter of how and when. Pretty cool death scene, though. One of the few times we were shown the direct results of the violence\u2014a man with an axe sticking out of his chest.<\/p>\n<p>To me, the most interesting point the movie raised wasn&#8217;t the whole &#8220;Is he really having visions from God, or is he just crazy?&#8221; thing. It was the nature of the &#8220;demons.&#8221; Maybe I&#8217;ve just been watching too much Buffy, but I&#8217;d been thinking of demons as scaly, horned, undead, or possibly green-skinned lounge singers\u2014not human, in other words. Dad said that the demons he was instructed to destroy were only masquerading as human, but in the end, when the nature of the demons was revealed, we were shown human beings doing evil things: killing, child molesting, and so forth. Are we our own demons? Is God a vigilante? Are there acts for which the possibility of redemption is denied, after all?
