we’ve lost our safe place,
they cry, but I don’t believe
we were ever safe

My sinuses, my sinuses! I had a horrible night last night, couldn’t breathe no matter what position I lay in or how much Vicks I spread on my nose. Finally, around midnight, I took an allergy pill, which didn’t clear my head but at least made it possible to breathe, and I slept till 7 am, when the pill wore off and my breathing passages closed up again.

I’m a bit better since I got up, but still breathing through crud. And feeling somewhat drifty and logey. I’m still not sure if I’m actually sick or just extremely allergic. Either way, I feel very much like not moving at all today. I’m supposed to be doing my four-mile run, but I’d probably be putting that off until tomorrow anyway so I could spend more time with the relatives. The lack of breathing capability just makes it more appealing to put off my run till tomorrow. Possibly I’ll do it this afternoon, if I feel all right, and depending on what time the cousins head back to LA. We have no plans for the day in particular, but Mom said she’d call me at around 9:30 (still have an hour and a half to putz around and wake up). Mom is getting pretty tired, too, from all her running around.

Yesterday, I lazed about all morning, then went in to work. I was still feeling energy-less, but it was a quiet day and the three and a half hours went quickly. After work, Mom had preceded me home, and called for pizzas to be picked up while I did a few evening chores and relaxed a bit. Then we picked up the pizzas and drove out to my brother’s, where the cousins were already waiting.

I was very hungry and ate rather a lot of pizza (seven slices, if I remember correctly), chatted with the relatives, then went to see Mrs. Beasley and the kitties. Mrs. B was sleeping in a pet bed on the porch of the guest house. I left her alone to sleep for a while, but when I heard her snuffling and knew she was awake, I petted her for a bit, while she shivered and snuffed. Such an old, old doggie! I love her.

I also stopped on my way to the back yard to pet Penny for a bit. She’s chained up and can’t come and play like the other dogs, so she’s very happy for someone to stop and give her some attention. She wags her whole body and grins her pit bull grin.

The kittens, three little balls of orange fluff, were hiding behind the wood box. I didn’t want to disturb them so I just looked and left them there. The one in front fiercely hissed a tiny kitten hiss at me. So cute!

When I got home, I did the rest of the chores and then uploaded a few more stories to my new archive. The Buffy stories are going quickly, I’ll probably finish them today. The only long story there is “U-Turn,” which I’ve divided into two parts.

I still haven’t heard anything from my co-writer. I emailed her yesterday morning. Tried to keep a cordial but distant tone, as if we were never more than acquaintances. I’m finding that I really hope she doesn’t answer. I’ve done my duty, and have nothing more to say to her. Which is different from all the other times I’ve written to her: I’d start out checking my email, looking for a reply, hoping that this time I’d get an answer, slowly becoming disillusioned and sad as it became clear there’d be no reply. This time, I’m almost breathing a sigh of relief when I check my mail and see no response. I guess that’s progress, right?

It will probably be another week or so before I’ve finished adding back all the stories that were already there. Then I can start posting the few that had escaped, including “Looking Glass.”

Here’s a picture of a previous batch of kittens at my brother’s place, with Momcat on the right.
